
John Baum was born in 1758 in Clearfield Township, Cambria County to Jacob Frederick Baum, Sr. and Susanna Margaretha Kirshner. John enlisted in Maryland and served with the Maryland Militia.

John was married twice:

Married 2. Mary (Forshey) Baum (married about 1781)
John fought in the Revolutionary War. He joined in Frederick Co., Maryland.
He moved to Huntingdon Co, PA after the war and then to Cambria Co., PA
Served in the Revolutionary War with Richard Nagle. They were close friends, Richard married John’s sister, Mary Catherine Baum.
John Baum fought in the Revolutionary War. John entered the service of the United States. He entered as a volunteer militia man in the company commanded by Captain Michael McGuire (Founder of Loretto, PA. Possibly he influenced John and his family to go to PA) and Lieutenant Thomas Rees and Laurence Arbough in the regiment of Maryland Militia commanded by Col. Norman Bruce about the first of January 1776. They marched about the fourth of the same month from Frederick County in Maryland through Hanover, Filler York, Lancaster, and Philadelphia to Basking Ridge in New Jersey and met a number of other troops under the command of General Washington. He continued there about a month and then returned with Capt. McGuire Company to Frederick County in Maryland and was discharged about the first of March of the same year.
John again enlisted about the end of June or first of July of the year 1781. Again in the volunteer Militia of Frederick Town in Maryland in the Company commanded by Capt. Boyer and Lieutenant Murdock and marched through Annapolis and Georgetown to Yorktown. At Annapolis he was transferred to a company commanded by Capt. Linn and at Georgetown to a company commanded by Captain Murdock & Lieutenant George Biller.
At Yorktown he met with the troops under General Washington and was placed under the command of General Mordecai Gist during the siege and was present at the surrender of Lord Cornwallis and on duty when the British army laid down their arms on the 19th of October 1781. After remaining about two weeks at Yorktown. He marched to Annapolis and there was discharged on the tenth of December 1781. Served as a Private and a Sergent.
PENSION WARRANT #8109 BOUNTY LAND WARRANT # 30621-160-55 Received a pension of $24.82 per annum, to commence on the 4th day of March 1834, Certificate of Pension found the 8th day of May 1833. Information from the National Archives Washington, D.C. Received May 21, 1992
